Small Firms Seek big gains
Technology key to productivity, survey finds:

Boosting productivity is a key issue for many small businesses owners, and they see technology as crucial in addressing the issues, a survey scheduled for release today has found.

The online poll of 855 small-business owners across Canada was conducted by Ipsos-Reid last month for Microsoft Canada Co.

Seventy-three per cent of those surveyed considered increasing productivity a priority. And 81 per cent did not feel increasing productivity concerns only big business and the government.

The key to improving productivity and competitiveness is adopting technology, 82 per cent of respondents said. Seventy-nine per cent surveyed said they use technology to make their business more efficient and productive.

But many aren’t stopping there. Within the next year, 64 per cent plan to update their software to improve productivity. Of those, 44 per cent are developing new websites while 48 per cent say they will introduce new business processes.

But it’s not always easy for small firms to explore ways to boost productivity.

Sixty-two per cent of respondents saw cost as a barrier, while 41 per cent said finding time was a hurdle.

A helping hand may be what’s needed.

“One of the things we found from small business through this research was that more than 37 per cent felt that they would need assistance to use or implement technology in their business,” said Andrea Van Leeuwen, a group manager at Microsoft Canada.
